I asked kimya dawson to record a song for the plan-it-x compilation cd. She was on tour in europe and didn't really feel like writing and recording a song on her own and saw this as the perfect opportunity to fulfill her dream of starting a band with leo from bear creek, her 12 year old hero. she asked leo to record a song with her and he was excited to do it. she thought it would be really fun to get a bunch of her other friends in annecy, france involved too. so she got together with leo, angelo spencer, ben lupus, jane kidder, billy jet pilot, howard hughes, and her friends jarrod and emily (from port townsend, wa) who were on tour as the solvents. they recorded the song "amazing kids doing amazing shit". (the song for the PIX comp)
it was so fun they decided to make a whole album. so after some fun collaborations, great singing by marie, awesome hang outs, and many trips to the ice cream store the album was done. this album is what you get when you take people who are huge fans of each other and put them in room together with an 8 track. there is a lot of love and friendship in this project. and it kind of happened by accident.
KIMYA DAWSON
kimya dawson is a wonderful girl and everywhere she goes people fall in love with her. i first heard her when pascaloo made us a mix CD. we were on tour in europe and our friend felix was driving us. we played a show in belgium and pascaloo came. we decided to drive home to felix's house in koln that night. on the way home we listened to the CD and when kimya's songs came on we sat silently and listened to them all. when they were done we were like "who was that?" it was great, i loved it. hannah loved it. felix loved it. when i got home i asked matty pop chart if he had ever heard of her and it turns out he had just met her randomly on tour. they played some shows together, he said she was coming to bloomington to stay for 3 days and play a show. ghost mice played, matty played...it was great and she destroyed bloomington. everyone was in love. she is a great person and makes friends wherever she goes. this CD captures that feeling. this CD is a snapshot of people having fun. a party photo. it was recorded in france in fall/winter of 2005 while she was touring. she made friends in france. they formed a band and made a record. all of the kids on this record have other bands too (i think). one of them is a band called bear creek from france. leo (who sings and plays on this CD) is in bear creek. he's 13 years old. he writes great songs. this is an 11 track collection of friends having fun. sweet mostly acoustic songs with lot's of different people singing. kimya sings a lot too and it sounds kinda like a kimya dawson record but with some really nice additions! whatch out. you might fall in love. Kimya has many other great records you can read about on her web-page. here newest full length features guests like matty pop chart and paul baribeau. bear creek has recordings too which you should really hear.
Kimya Was in a band called the MOLDY PEACHES and now plays solo. She lives in Olympia Washington with her husband Angelo (who is also in ANTSY PANTS) and their tiny baby daughter, Panda.
Over the past 4 years of almost constant touring and recording and documenting all of her activities at both diaryland.com and at livejournal.com Kimya has become a stronger musician and person with a good team of friends and family all over the world to keep her company wherever she may wander.
BESIDES TAKING IT EASY SINCE PANDA WAS BORN, KIMYA IS ALMOST ALWAYS ON TOUR.
Among the folks she has toured with are They Might Be Giants, The Butchies, Herman Dune, Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, Third Eye Blind, Jeffrey Lewis, Daniel Johnston, and K records founder Calvin Johnson. And she has played numerous shows with The Mountain Goats and Regina Spektor. She will play in big venues opening for huge pop acts or in your basement with the kids from down the street. It makes no difference to her. She just loves to and needs to play. On separate occasions and on different continents Frank Black (The Pixies) and Kaia Wilson (Team Dresch, The Butchies) have recently called Kimya Dawson a "road warrior". And there is no better way to describe someone who is most comfortable cruising the highway in her minivan, with her baby(doll) in the back seat, on her way to sing you songs and give you hugs, and probably ask to sleep on your couch. Not because she can't afford to stay in a hotel, but because she is on a mission to embrace the whole world. Literally.
JUNO (THE MOVIE)
Antsy Pants has 2 songs in the new movie JUNO. the songs are TREEHUGGER and VAMPIRE. i'm pretty excited about this.
