Door-Keys, The

I have known Matte Cathcart (the drummer) since he was about 16 years old (with braces and everything). he just turned up at my house one day when OPERATION: CLIFF CLAVIN was practicing. he popped his head into the basement and introduced himself and asked us if we would play a show in his hometown of Greenwood, IN. Greenwood is about 45 miles north of Bloomington and Matte would ride his bike down every weekend to hang out in bloomington. We played the show and became quick friends and eventually started a band together called DISARM. one night after a DISARM show we decided to dumpster the campus dorms since school had just got out. some cops pulled up and started drilling us and behaving like cops often do. they told us it was illegal to be on campus and they could arrest us if they wanted to. then they found out that Matte was only 17 and a high school drop out and they got really mad at me. i told the cop lady that i thought i was doing a good thing for the kid by letting him stay at my house when he rides his bike to town. i told her that i didn't do drugs or drink (i didn't) and that i thought i was a good influence on him. she said, "if that's what you think, then you better think again". she was really mean. she thought i should be telling him to get back in school. anyway, i got ticket and had to go to court for contributing to the delequincy of a minor. I got off after his parents wrote a note to the courts saying that i was his legal guardian for that night.

and sometime after that the door-keys started in August of 2003 on a hot night by the railroad tracks in greenwood, where magical things do happen.

the door-keys became bloomington hometown heroes. for a while they were the "local band" that played many shows and they'd pack the basement, and for good reason. have you ever thought that maybe those people who saw X (the LA punk band) play in a tiny little club in LA back in the day knew that something important was happening? that's sort of how you might feel if you see the door-keys. someday people will look back on this band and know that they were important. how do i describe them? maybe i would say, soulful male/female vocals over catchy punk rock songs about love, hate, inspiration and imperfection.
