I met MATTY POP CHART when he was a tiny bearded boy playing drums in ABE FROMAN (see ABE FROMAN for more info on that). We were playing some shows together sometime after that in the hills of KY and matty passed me his solo tape. it was titled "rivendale" i think. named after the elven city in lord of the rings. there were songs about pangea, eating, things he likes and other cute stuff. i liked the tape. i liked matty pop chart. Later, we were all playing together (THIS BIKE IS A PIPE BOMB, ABE FROMAN, THE DEVIL IS ELECTRIC and DEFIANCE OHIO) at the LUCERO warehouse on our way home from the SOOPHIE NUN SQUAD new years party. Somehow we convinced Matty to play a solo set. He played and it was great. He also did a MOUNTAIN GOATS cover ("cubs in five") and got me interested in listening to them again (my best friend sam had tried to convince me years before). Matty is easy to love. he is lovable. a year or so later his song writing evolved from cute and funny, to talented and impressive. Later, he and I moved in together with SPOONBOY into a house in bloomington called the house of 1,000 daggers. he became one of my dearest friends and of course i wanted to release his albums.
Matty POP CHART can play anything. he is also good at all games, real-life and computer/video games as well as most sports and just about anything else. But he doesn't like haunted houses.
in this photo you will notice, RENT, written on his hand. rent was do. he used to play drums in abe froman with his sister erin tobey. he plays in mt. gigantic sometimes and is in a new band with ginger from one reason called GOOD LUCK. he if from michigan but lives in bloomington IN.
He also has a CD-EP/7" record on K records, a split with KIMYA DAWSON.
