I met Ali (the songwriter of the SISSIES) in berkeley, CA. at gilman st. i had seen hear a few days before in portland stealing candy from the bulk bins at safeway. i was there to buy fireworks to mail to sam for her birthday (the 4th of july). she came to our (OPERATION: CLIFF CLAVIN) show and i thought that was that. then i saw her again at gilman street. she seemed really cool so i went up to say hello. the conversation went like this: "hey, didn't i see you in portland?" "yeah" "what are you doing? are you traveling around?" "yeah, all summer" "do you want to come on tour with us and be our roadie?" "yeah, sure". she met us a few days later at the frontier in albuquerque, NM. a few days later Hannah said, "we should start a band". i said, "i'll play drums". that's how the sissies started. Frankie of OPCC suggested we call or self the sissies since Alo had been using the expression, _________ is for sissies a lot on tour. anything could be for sissies. i might say, "we need gas." Ali would say, "gas is for sissies."
The Sissies were active from 1998-2002 and were a pop-punk band from Bloomington, Indiana. They released two albums, "Geography" (which i played drums on) in 1999 on Plan-it-X Records, and "Look Back and Laugh" in 2001 on New Disorder Records. Both are currently out of print, but included on The Sissies discography "Everything In The World," which is now out on Plan-It-X Records.
They played a 3-song reunion show at the Plan-It-X Records 10 Year Anniversary in Bloomington, Indiana in the summer of 2004. Ali and Jrd went on to form What The Kids Want. Ali also started a non-profit bookstore/community center in Bloomington called Boxcar Books. Hannah, who had previously played in Operation: Cliff Clavin, also played in The Devil is Electric, both of which are now defunct. She currently plays in Ghost Mice.
